Mindfulness Therapy Edmonton

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is difficult to define as different people have different understanding of it. For our purposes we are using the following definition: Mindfulness is the state in which one becomes more aware of one’s physical, mental, and emotional condition in the present moment, without becoming judgmental.

How Does It Work?

Individuals pay attention to a variety of experiences, such as bodily sensations, cognitions, and feelings, and accept them without being influenced by them. Mindfulness practices are believed to be able to help people better control their thoughts, rather than be controlled by them.

What can it be used for

Mindfulness is being used with a variety of other modalities and is integrated into treatment plans. Specifically, mindfulness is a formal component of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive therapy (MBCT). Mindfulness can help people to separate themselves from their unhelpful thoughts, emotions and physical sensations before they becoming overwhelming.

Generally they can help relieve symptoms of stress, physical pain and other mental health concerns.
