Teen Therapy Edmonton

What Is Teen Therapy?

Adolescence is a lot to navigate all at once. Teens are learning to become more independent while still needing structure and support, often at the exact moment that peer relationships, school pressure, and identity questions all show up together. It’s a stage where things like anxiety, depression, disordered eating, grief, or the impact of family changes such as divorce can surface for the first time, or intensify.

As a parent, it can be hard to tell whether what you’re seeing is a normal part of growing up or a sign your teen needs more support. Either way, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Our therapists work with adolescents using approaches suited to teens specifically, including CBT, ACT, EMDR, and narrative therapy,  chosen based on what will actually work for your teen.

We also work closely with parents throughout the process. Teen therapy means respecting your teen’s confidentiality as they move toward adulthood, while still honouring your role as a parent who wants to understand and support them. We help families find that balance together.

Signs Your Teen Could Benefit From Therapy:

  • Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they used to enjoy
  • Noticeable changes in mood, energy, or irritability
  • Struggling with peer relationships or social situations
  • Declining grades or motivation at school
  • Difficulty coping with a family change, such as separation or divorce
  • Signs of anxiety, low mood, or excessive worry
  • Exposure to a difficult or traumatic experience

Teen Therapy Can:

  • Provide a confidential space for your teen to process what they’re experiencing
  • Build coping skills for anxiety, depression, or overwhelming emotions
  • Support your teen through family transitions like divorce or separation
  • Help process difficult or traumatic experiences using approaches like EMDR
  • Support parents in understanding how to help, while respecting their teen’s need for privacy

How do I know if my teen needs therapy, or if this is just a normal phase?

Some moodiness and pulling away is a typical part of adolescence. It’s worth paying closer attention if changes are sudden, persistent, or affecting school, friendships, or daily functioning, or if your teen seems to be struggling to cope rather than just going through a phase. When in doubt, a conversation with one of our therapists can help you figure out if support would help.

Will I know what my teen talks about in sessions?

Teen therapy involves a level of confidentiality that respects your teen as they grow toward independence. At the same time, we work with parents to understand general progress and how to support your teen at home, and safety concerns are always communicated. Your therapist can talk through exactly how this works before sessions begin.

What kind of therapy works best for teens?

It depends on your teen and what they’re navigating. Our therapists draw from approaches like CBT, ACT, narrative therapy, art therapy, and EMDR, and will choose the modality that fits your teen’s needs, personality, and comfort level, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
