Adolescents are a unique and exciting population to work with.

The needs of adolescents are complicated as they are learning to become adults but find themselves in situations that are new and can be overwhelming. Adolescents are often reluctant to share some of their biggest challenges with their parents but may need an adult that can help them to make sense of what is going on.
Parents want their teens to grow into responsible, healthy, resilient adults and while they are learning to become those very people the changes that they go through are complex and confusing. Parents often don’t know or recognize what their teenager is going through, or, when they do they aren’t certain how to talk to them.

What is normal and what might indicate a need to see a therapist is tricky for both parents and teens and there is a lot to consider. Some questions to consider may be:

  • Has there been a significant change in their anger, aggression, arguing or their eating?
  • Has there been a change in how they are performing in school?
  • Has there been a change in their social lives? Are they withdrawn and not going out as much? Has their friendship group suddenly changed?
  • Are you concerned about risky behaviour or self-harming behaviours?
  • Are they complaining about physical symptoms despite being healthy?
  • Has there been a significant change in their life? A divorce or separation? A death of someone they were close to? A marriage? Some form of abuse?
  • Are you suspecting problems with drugs or alcohol?

At Reframed, we have psychologists who have a wealth of experience working with adolescents and young adults. These therapists can help your teen grow into a healthy, resilient and independent adult. Quite often the symptoms that are presented are actually their way of coping with a larger concern in their life. Your teen’s therapist will help them to sort out what they are coping with and find some strategies and tools that are more helpful.

Your psychologist can help adolescents:

  • Learn about their anxiety or depression, where it stems from and how to cope with it in a positive and healthy manner.
  • Cope with any trauma they may have experienced.
  • Improve and build self-esteem.
  • Learn social skills to help develop relationships.
  • Support their development through the transition into adulthood.
  • Create strategies and skills to make life decisions including career choices, relationships, blended family issues, etc.
